History: The use of frankincense has been recorded for 1000’s of years, if not more. Some of the primary uses were for spiritual and religious pursuits. Of course, one of the most famous uses was as a gift to the baby Jesus from the three Wise men, along with myrrh. It was also said to be used in embalming in Egyptian times. It was, and still is in some churches, used as incense in a censer. A censer held the raw frankincense resin, and was then lit and swung around the church. Frankincense was said to relax the church patrons, and put them in a state which might help them to receive God more readily.
Frankincense has been used throughout history as a comforting chest and lung blend, especially in times of loss or grief. Perhaps that is why religious institutions have used it for millennia. One of the best ways to use it is to mix with rose absolute, cypress, neroli and a tinge of black pepper.
It is grown primarily in the Middle East and Northern Africa, and is a resin that comes out of the shrub and is then gathered before steam distillation. It is said that there are long-haired goats in certain regions that adore the aroma of Frankincense, so much so that they rub against the tree and get the resin caught in their hair. Hence, the goat-herders have a secondary occupation of bringing the resin to market and selling it to be steam distilled.
Blends well with: spruce, fir, lavender, cypriol, bergamot, sandalwood, lemon, lime, ginger, cinnamon, black pepper, cedar wood, myrrh, pine, cedar, vetiver, bergamot, clary sage, helichrysum and elemi.
Frankincense is an oil with a lot of gusto, and it can be extremely tenacious in a blend, therefore should be used with care. It can be very strong, so you do not need a lot in a blend. It is considered grounding and comforting and is said to be good for relaxing and meditation. Frankincense is also known to be amazing for mature skin.
The folklore of Frankincense is that because of its knotted branches, it was a natural remedy for rheumatism and arthritis. The Doctrine of Signatures is a fascinating piece of folklore that says plants were made to look like certain parts of the human body that they may be useful in healing. For example, the herb eyebright is said to look like a blue eye, so it has been used in the herbal form for treating eye disorders. Therefore, since frankincense has very knotty branches, it has been said to mimic arthritic conditions. Frankincense may also good for promoting relief in the body for aches and discomfort. It may be beneficial for cleansing and clearing, soothing of chest and lung issues, and it may possibly help to ease inflammatory response. It has also been used historically to help ease and comfort us when we are going through times of heartache, and could support us to breathe a little easier. Frankincense is also incredibly adept at helping smooth out those creases and crevices that happens when our skin starts the inevitable decline. For a mature skin formula, try with helichrysum, carrot, rose, neroli and lavender. Just to make you feel better...mature skin is basically any skin that has seen some sun, which is pretty much all of us!
