Properties: Lavender essential oil is one of the world’s most popular and versatile essential oils and is one of the few essential oils that can be applied directly to the skin without dilution. Lavender oil is known for its diverse therapeutic properties which include antibacterial, antifungal, respiratory ailments and in boosting the immune system. Lavender essential oil use is commonly used for the treatment of abrasions, cuts, burns, and scars. Lavender oil is also used for numerous skin conditions, skin care, and rejuvenation, as well as to promote relaxation and provide relief from anxiety, stress, and headaches.
History/Fun Fact: Lavender is one of the rarest and treasured lavender in the world and is most well known for its sweet floral scent. It is grown in a unique climate and elevation exclusively in the Kashmir Region of the Himalayas. Lavender is one of the strewing herbs used in the Middle Ages to help with bacteria, insects, and as a disinfectant. It may have been used to help assuage symptoms of colds and flu and other ailments. It was used in a pot on the open hearth and simmered, and also was good for getting rid of some of the aromas that were inherent before the advent of septic systems. Lavender flowers were also used in mattresses and on floors to help mitigate any unsavory odors that may arise. “In 1910 French chemist and scholar René-Maurice Gattefossé discovered the virtues of the essential oil of lavender. He was in his lab when he accidentally burned himself badly due to an explosion. Both of his hands were covered with a rapidly developing gas gangrene. He treated his wound with lavender essence which stopped the gasification of the tissue and was followed by healing the following day (Gattefossé R-M, Tisserand RB (ed.) 1993).”
Suggested Uses / Recipes: Combine Lavender essential oil and Bergamot essential oil with a carrier oil or lotion of your choice or add to bath water, salts or scrubs to improve your skin care regimen and aid skin conditions.
Safety and contraindications: There are not any known contraindications for Lavender oil. Although generally safe to apply topically without dilution we recommend performing a patch test for skin sensitivity and to dilute with a carrier oil, such as fractionated coconut oil, to a concentration of 2-5% if necessary. If you have a reaction, stop using and immediately consult a medical professional.
Child Safety: Safe to use on and around children. Suggest diluting prior to topical use.
