Clary sage is somewhat of an enigma, it is so many different things, and does so many different things! The aroma alone is sweet, floral, herbal, woodsy, fruit, soft...Dare I say complex? It is reminiscent of an ancient forest combined with your Grandpa’s wood shop, or who knows maybe your Grandma’s wood shop? All I know is, it is one of the most calming and comforting essences there is. The complexity actually makes it adaptable to so many different situations I dare say.
Are things getting you down? Clary sage is a great pick me up! Are you wanting to get better rest and relaxation, yes you guessed it...Clary sage. Clary sage is a lot like lavender in that it is effective in so many areas, primarily because it is a balancing oil. It can help relax you, and also assist you in clearing your mind...which can help lift you up. It is very important oil for supporting feminine challenges. Yes, those of you out there that may take issue with ‘feminine challenges’ are thinking “Challenges? “Yea right...What I have are a lot more than challenges my friend!” Some of those annoyances can benefit with a dash of clary sage. One popular use it to combine clary sage with jasmine and rub on stomach and back, and it may just give you some soothing relief from cramping. It may help with mood and attitude, and that is an awe-inspiring benefit!
Safety and contra-indications: Clary sage can be a bit skin sensitizing for some individuals, so if you have sensitive skin to start with, try a little less.
Child Safety: Overall clary sage is safe, but as a precaution it should be used in small quantities, and always diluted.
Suggested use: To get that ancient forest effect as we mentioned above blend clary sage with frankincense, elemi, sandalwood, spruce and dash of cardamom. Want to spice things up in the boudoir? Experiment with some clary sage, ylang ylang, rose, myrtle, sandalwood and a wee hint of cinnamon in a nice massage oil. It is very warming and sensual, and is sure to please even the most discerning of aroma enthusiasts!
Take care: Do not apply without a carrier such as jojoba, bath salts or any unscented product like lotion or shampoo. Do not use with infants and children without instruction, and if so at a greatly diluted ratio of .5% or less. The recommendation for topical use is from 3 to 5 % for most people. However, take care if you are elderly or are ill. If you have a reaction to it, stop using and immediately contact a medical professional. Not for internal use unless under the guidelines of an aromatherapist. Remember that essential oils and absolutes are 75 to 100 times stronger than the plant they come from, so they are very different than an herbal or other natural preparation.
