Essential Oils for Beating the Wintertime Blues Posted on 08 Jan 10:08

Well… the holidays are over. They were wonderful, weren’t they? But now what? It’s still cold out and there isn’t much going on in the way of family get-togethers or parties. For many people, this is the time when winter blues can kick in.

There’s a big difference between the regular wintertime blues and a much more serious condition known as SAD, or Seasonal Affective Disorder. This disorder is defined by prolonged feelings of anxiety, lethargy, and a poor mood. It’s estimated that about 500,000 people suffer from symptoms of SAD during the darkest of winter months. Generally, symptoms will lift in early April, but what to do until then…?

Believe it or not, essential oils may be able to help if you notice that you are experiencing any of these symptoms:

Depression: Feelings of low self-esteem, despair, apathy, and a sense of unhappiness.
Anxiety: An inability to handle stress levels, and an overall feeling of tension.
Mood Swings/Abnormal Mood: Extreme changes in mood with periods of mania, abnormal highs and lows.
Trouble Sleeping: The desire to sleep for long periods of time; inability to fall asleep or stay asleep; early morning waking.
Lack of Energy: Feelings of fatigue, exhaustion, and failure to carry on normally through your regular routine.
Weight Gain: Food cravings for sweets and comfort foods; emotional eating/mindless snacking.
Social Problems: Lack of desire for social contact or participating in activities.
Loss of Libido: A decrease of interest in intimacy or physical contact with your mate.

THE UPLIFTING POWER OF ESSENTIAL OILS

It’s pretty normal to feel a little down during the cold winter months and health professionals have found a number of different contributors to SAD including: a lack of sunlight, poor diet, and low-quality sleep. Use these energizing and uplifting essential oils to give your mood a boost this winter!

Citrus. The scent of citrus essential oils can really transform your mood. The invigorating fragrance is known to stimulate the mind and improve functions of the brain including mood and productivity. Citrus has a strong smell and energetic essence that’s great for use in your diffuser, as a home cleaning solution, or even in topical rubs to calm feelings of anger and anxiousness. There are so many to choose from, too, including: Clementine, Key Lime, Neroli, Blood Orange, Sweet Orange, Wild Orange, Mandarin, Petitgrain, and Tangerine. Try the Citrus Bliss Blend, too!
German Chamomile. Everybody can feel down from time to time. Use the power of German Chamomile to stimulate your senses and lift feelings of sadness, disappointment, and sluggishness. Just smelling the soothing and calming fragrance is enough to relax the nervous system and eliminate SAD symptoms. Add just a few drops to a warm bath or to your diffuser to gain the mood-boosting benefits. German Chamomile blends well with other feel-good oils like Citrus, Tea Tree, Jasmine, Lavender, and Ylang Ylang.
Hydacheim. This exotic and aromatic flower delivers a volatile oil with a sweet and spicy scent that is wonderful on its own. But it’s more than just a pleasant fragrance. Hydacheim’s active plant essences are actually known to work wonders on the human nervous system. Traditionally used in Ayurvedic medicine for centuries, you can use Hydacheim oil to calm mental and physical stressors as it has a powerful tranquilizing effect.
Rosemary. This herb has many common uses around the house (especially in the kitchen), but did you know that the fragrant oils it contains are known to improve mental functions, too? Health practitioners have found the essential oil of Rosemary to enhance memory, reduce mental fatigue, and improve alertness and focus. Topically, it’s also a great pain reliever for muscles and joints… even headaches! The fragrance of this stimulating oil is ideal for aromatherapy first thing in the morning. Blends well with other mood-boosting essential oils including: Cedarwood, Cinnamon, Eucalyptus, Lemon, and Peppermint.
Lavender. This oil is effectively uplifting with a floral fragrance that calms all types of stress. Because of its ability to soothe the mind and body, Lavender has been used to enhance sleep, relaxation, and mood in both children and adults. The gentle aroma eases anxiety, worry, muscle tension, and negative thoughts.

HOW ESSENTIAL OILS WORK ON YOUR MOOD

Essential oils are more than just fragrances. Because they are derived from plant material, they contain what many have called “plant essences” - the active chemical compounds inherent to the original plant that often constitute the medicinal properties of your essential oils. While medical professionals don’t yet know exactly how different essential oils are able to influence subtle energies to positively impact emotional health, their use in aromatherapy is well-known to help manage stress, reduce anxiety, and contribute to a feeling of well-being.

Aromatherapy. Apply a few drops of your favorite mood-boosting essential oils to your palm and rub your hands together. Gently inhale the aroma from your hands, and then exhale slowly. A few deep breaths should help to improve your mood in just minutes! Alternatively, you can add the oil to your diffuser for longer-lasting aromatic benefits.
Topical. You can use essential oils for a relaxing massage by diluting them in a carrier oil, adding them to your favorite unscented lotions, or using them to make homemade salves/muscle rubs. Apply to specific pulse points including the wrist, neck, base of the spine, bottom of the feet, and the temples.
Soak. Including essential oils in a foot soak or a sea salt bath is a great way to relieve stress and melt away tensions. Use any of the above-listed oils, or blend together your favorites for a unique scent and powerful aromatic benefits.

A NOTE ON QUALITY

When using essential oils for medicinal purposes, the quality of the oil becomes the most important factor. Some companies make essential oils that do not contain even the minimum amounts of active plant compounds needed to provide a therapeutic effect. They are simply perfumes.

You can rest assured that all Healing Solutions essential oils have been tested to be 100% pure and recommended for use in aromatherapy. Your optimal health and happiness is our top priority, so use these oils with confidence!
